Narcissism......truly a PD or a lifestyle choice

Since reading the books and lots on this site and thinking about several elements eg why do narcs never feel the consequences of their actions, they keep repeating the same pattern without issue, never seek therapy as they believe there is nothing wrong with them etc etc......I got to wondering.....

.....Is being a Narc truly a personality disorder or is it a lifestyle choice? Of course, I know from huge personal pain that they are destructive, selfish and they do not think or have the same morality as "normal" people....but is there any evidence medically or otherwise that this is the result of something being "wrong" with brain development or something similar, or is it just a convenient way of us victims describing people who used us and have stuck a finger up at societal norms and have just decided to put themselves first?

Don't misunderstand me - neither is ethically or morally right, but I'm interested in the evidence that this is something unconcious rather than just an unpalatable choice?
